Join us on Wednesday, March 18th at 7pm for a presentation of an extraordinary film. You can do so online, or you can join us in-person at the Clairidge Theater in Montclair N.J.
In collaboration with the documentary team of Woman of Stars and Mountains, Mad in America and Montclair Film are offering a special online and in-person screening of this moving film about Rita, an indigenous woman from Mexico, who left her Tarahumara mountain community in northern Mexico and embarked on a journey to Kansas. There, she was involuntarily detained and confined in a psychiatric hospital for 12 years because the hospital authorities could not ascertain her identity, origins, or the language she spoke. This moving portrait of Rita explores the multiple forms of racism and discrimination that indigenous women face.
After the screening, there will be a panel discussion with the Director, Santiago Esteinou, and the founders of Raices Culture Center, Francisco G. Gomez and Nicole Wines, on the topics of earth migration rights, ritual practices, language & racism, and voices and visions, moderated by Mad in America’s Mad in the World Liaison, Karin Jervert.
